Bible Lesson & MEMORY VERSE

Our Bible verse today tells us that God gave us the Bible so we can learn more about Jesus. When we
choose to believe in Jesus, we will have eternal life.

Now, let’s say it all together:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His oneand only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
- John 3:16

Today’s lesson is titled: "The Road to Emmaus"

Our Bible lesson today tells an amazing story about a day when someone important walked and talked with some men on the Road to Emmaus, but they didn't even recognize Him.

We are going to learn that we can trust Jesus, even when we don’t understand how God is working
through current events.

BIBLE STORY - "The Road to Emmaus"

READ Luke 24:13-35

On the day that Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to different people. Towards the end of the day, He appeared to two of His disciples who were walking from Jerusalem towards Emmaus, which was a 2-3 hour walk. The Bible tells us that the eyes of the men were “restrained,” or not allowed, to know that it was Jesus who joined them on their walk.

In today’s Gospel, a couple of disciples were walking along a road, and they were feeling sad that Jesus had died. Jesus showed up and started walking with them, but they didn’t know right away that it was Him. He started asking questions about what they were discussing, and they explained how upset they were over the death of Jesus. Then Jesus started to describe to them how the prophets and Scripture had predicted what would happen. He told the disciples about Himself! Well, they invited Jesus to stay for supper, and as He was breaking the bread, they suddenly realized who He was! Their eyes were open and they were filled with joyful enthusiasm.

Sometimes things in our lives are disguised, in a way. We don’t always recognize or understand things that God is doing. We might encounter difficult situations or circumstances and feel confused about why God would allow something like that to happen. We can trust that God is at work, but we might still face challenges. We won’t always find out right away why we have such trouble in our lives. We might not even understand until Heaven. But God promises that He is working things for our good. We cling to the hope that even hard things can bring blessings. We can also cling to the best news of all: unlike the disciples on the road, we do know that Jesus came back to life. We have the whole picture of the Bible, and we know that He was sent by God to die and come back to life, so that we can have eternal life with Him!

family discussion questions

5-9 year olds

If Jesus is God, which He is, wouldn’t He have already known why the men were sad? [Yes]

Why do you think He asked them about it then? [Allow for answers, perhaps it was a way to begin conversation. Recognizing the emotions of people around us is important and allows us to talk to them about what they are feeling and could be a way to introduce Jesus to people.]

When you read the Bible, sometimes it makes sense, and sometimes we need help understanding what we are reading. If you listen to your parents, or Sunday School teacher, when they teach you about the things of God, it is possible that God will reveal something to you. God wants everyone to know about Him, but He only reveals them a little bit at a time.

When you take a hot bath, what happens to the mirror? [It gets foggy.]

That’s like what it is for us while we are on this earth. The things of God can be foggy. He can be mysterious.
But what happens as the bathroom cools? [The water eventually fades away.]

As you learn more about God, read the Bible, go to church, listen to good advice from those who love Jesus, then your mirror becomes less foggy. But while we are on earth our mirror will never be totally clear. That won’t happen until we are in heaven with Jesus. THEN we can ask any question we might have to Jesus and our mirror will be clear. We will understand all kinds of things that confused us here on earth.

Many times people will read something in the scriptures, not understand it, and then discount the Bible all together. That is not what we are to do. We are to ask God, seek His face, go to Him and give Him our confusions and worries. God is not out to trick us. He is on our side. He wants to reveal Himself to you. He has plenty of clues for you, but are you listening?
